Soil Health & Cover Crops Cost-Share

The Carver Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has recently developed a soil health cost‐share program. This program provides funding to landowners for the implementation of cover crops, and soil health management systems to improve the health and functions of their soils. By integrating soil management systems, it will protect and improve water quality in rivers, lakes, streams, and other valuable water resources in Carver County. Interested landowners and cooperators can request financial assistance from the Carver SWCD to implement soil health practices. All requests are subject to approval by the Carver SWCD Board.

Soil Health, Cover Crop, and Conservation Tillage

  • An incentive payment of $60 per acre is available for implementing a soil health cover crop (program maximum of 500 acres).
  • Cover crops cannot be harvested, terminated or tilled in the fall.
  • Grazing is allowed, but must maintain a minimum of 6″ vegetation height.
  • Cover crops can be used as supplemental forage by grazing or mechanical harvest the following spring.
  • Fields that receive cover crop funding through USDA EQIP are not eligible for SWCD funding during the same calendar year.
  • All applications will be ranked and batched using a form provided by the SWCD.
  • Incentive payments will be made after cover crop certification requirements have been met.
